Sanitation Changemaker

From Waste to Worth: A Young Professional Redefining Sanitation Work

Arun's journey in sanitation began in 2019, and his expertise now spans the complete waste management spectrum, both solid and liquid. He takes particular pride in his current focus, which is transforming dried sludge into agricultural products, including manure and treated water useful for agriculture and landscaping activities. It is a kind of role that requires both scientific knowledge and practical skill, which Arun seems to have mastered.

Arun's dedication to sanitation work runs deep, rooted in family values that emphasized completing every responsibility with full commitment, regardless of the task. He has consistently sought learnings, refined his approach, and poured his heart into making the Rudrapur FSTP a success story. His passion is evident even in how he beautifies the facility, cultivating fruits and vegetables around the site, with bananas and pomegranates thriving as his special pride.

What also outshines is Arun’s constant eye for learning and feedback. Arun attends and facilitates workshops for and with sector practitioners improvising his understanding about the FSTP operations as well as educating external stakeholders about the same. His latest achievement entails hosting government officials from Nagaland to showcase innovative mechanisms towards resource recovery and reuse of treated water and bio-matter produced from FTSP plant.

Under his good care, the plant currently works on 100% clean energy with 96 Solar panels with 50-Kilowatt capacity and produces manure which is supplied to farmers for agricultural activities. In addition to this, Arun chooses to dream bigger. His vision extends beyond managing plants for others. Long term, he aspires to establish his own waste treatment enterprise across Uttarakhand. More than business success, however, his goal is transformation and creating a model where sanitation workers receive fair compensation, proper benefits, and the dignity their work deserves.

"The work we do matters," Arun says simply. "We protect public health, support farmers, and keep communities clean. People doing this work should be proud of their role, big or small."

As he works toward his entrepreneurial dream, Arun continues his daily sprint across the Rudrapur site—testing, troubleshooting, and tending his garden—building the skills and confidence that are steadily shaping his future.
